What the Upgrade Entails

The reclassification of airports’ categories is a smart decision to match administrative levels with factors like how many passengers use them, what development is happening there, where they are, how much money they make, and how many people work there. Veer Savarkar International Airport used to be a Grade III airport, but now it will be a Grade II airport.

Impact on Airport Management

Before, the airport was managed by a joint general manager, but now it will have a General Manager in charge, giving them more power to make decisions and run operations. This change is likely to make administrative tasks smoother and improve services for passengers at the airport.

Milestone Achievements

The inauguration of the New Integrated Terminal Building at Veer Savarkar International Airport on July 18, 2023, marked a significant step forward in infrastructure development. With a sprawling built-up area of 40,837 sqm, the terminal can accommodate up to 1200 passengers during peak hours, significantly enhancing the airport’s capacity.

Operational Advancements: ILS Implementation

Adding to the airport’s capabilities, the Instrument Landing System (ILS) is set to become operational from April 18, 2024. Following successful validation procedures completed on February 22, 2024, the ILS will facilitate precision landing, particularly crucial during adverse weather conditions. Aeronautical Information Service has issued NOTAMs detailing the ILS operations, paving the way for safer and more efficient flight operations.

Anticipated Impact

The operationalization of ILS is poised to revolutionize civil aviation in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. It will not only enhance safety during adverse weather but also enable night flights and bolster tourism, particularly during the monsoon season. With these advancements, 2024 is expected to be a transformative year for civil aviation in the region.

The upgraded status and operational advancements underscore the commitment of the Airports Authority of India to elevate air travel standards and facilitate seamless connectivity in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
